You mean a classroom full of 8th graders doesn’t always smell like ass?

That’s consistent with 13-14 year old children. My son has to shower at least once a day to not stink too bad.

Always felt bad for the teachers that taught a class right after the kids got out of PE. What a smorgasbord of smells.

We had construction going on outside my classroom windows. You couldn’t even crack them open during less ons to let in at least a bit of fresh air. At some point you could taste the sweat on your tongue. Not smell it, actually taste it.

Admittedly, it’s been nearly three and a half decades since I spent any appreciable amount of time in an eighth grade classroom. But to the best of my recollection, butt-stank was pretty much a constant state of affairs.

I have the utmost respect and gratitude for anyone that has chosen education as their profession, especially that of middle school children. I also question whether most of them should be treated for some sort of masochism-related psychiatric disorder.

it’s a good thing I’m not a teacher, if I had to spend an entire workday surrounded by middle-schoolers I’d be running out to my car between every class to take a good slug of Sailor Jerry’s .

That’s certainly a plus.   I always figured most teachers got stuck with either teaching some sort of summer school or doing continuing education classes of their own during the summer. If you really do get the majority of the summer off....more time for rallycross. :)

I have to wheedle and cajole to get my 13-y-os to take a shower, and then once they get in, I can’t get them out. Fifteen minutes later, “It’s time to get out NOW.” “Okay, I just need to wash and do my hair.”

When I was in middle school (junior high school), our school had no AC. Neither did the high school. We would come back to class from PE dripping with sweat, then sit in an 80-degree classroom and reek.

At the same time, it’s very hard to get much fresh air in here. 6th period is about to come in. They will proclaim that the room stinks and start spraying perfumes and then I will get a nauseous headache.

Just depends upon what you’re cut out for. Because tenure though, there are teachers who shouldn’t be, but are. Firefighters cops and soldiers will just wind up dead or discharged.

It was more of an homage to middle school teachers. Especially MS band directors. I have been to the MS band concerts. I would eat a bullet after just a couple of weeks. But there are many who absolutely love it. God bless them.

It’s just a thing you’re either cut out for or you’re not. 16 years ago when I started, if they’d locked me in a room full of 8th graders somebody would have wound up moving to Pembroke.

There’s a level of joyful sadism in it for me at times as well. Right now, it’s cold outside. For the Bay Area, which means 59 degrees. So I let the outside air in and let them whine about it’s cold . But I reply that if Mr. Chuckerbutty isn’t cold, then it’s not cold.

Probably wood fabricating is a more apt description of what I do. Stuff that serves a purpose. I’m in the throes right now, albeit in baby steps, of making new Shaker-style cabinet doors for my kitchen.

Neat!

I'm definitely not a woodworking master. I'm currently trying to cobble together a quick and dirty dresser for my second daughter. (Daughter number 3 is due any day now, so I'm rushing it).

For something as complicated as a dresser, I’d probably look for something at Ikea. Or the Thrift Store, more likely. Or Craigslist.

It's actually not too bad. I made a dresser for our oldest daughter when daughter number two was born. They aren't super-fancy, but they are solid, and there's no particle board on them, so they should survive for a while.
